Background

NIUS aims to promote the use of New Institutional Economics (NIE) to research questions in relation to urban development and sustainability.  We are privileged to have two Nobel Laureates in Economics, Prof. Ronald Coase and Prof. Douglass North, helping us as research advisors.  Core members of the network comprise leading scholars in NIE, econometrician, lawyer, architect, town planner, project manager and entrepreneur.

NIUS is set up under the auspices of the Sustainable Urbanization Research Fund (SURF), a seed funding provided by the Faculty of Construction and Land Use for the development of a strategic focus area under The Hong Kong Polytechnic University.  Core activities of NIUS include i) conducting research, ii) organizing conferences and seminars, and iii) incubation of young scholars.
